Shellfish Biotoxins Risks – FSS Stakeholder Workshop

03 December 2015

On November 17th Food Standards Scotland held a second biotoxin workshop for shellfish harvesters, growers and processors in response to requests from both industry members and the enforcement community following its successful stakeholder event held in May.

This workshop was to raise awareness of marine biotoxins, risks associated with these toxins and ways in which the industry can manage these. It will also feed in to FSS’ evaluation of the guidance for management of biotoxin risk in shellfish.

Topics for discussion at this workshop included:

  • The regulatory and policy requirements relating to marine toxins.
  • An update on relevant research projects funded by FSS and Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas).
  • A summary of processes involved in taking decisions after monitoring and examples of applications of risk management in Scotland.
